English Training in the Manufacturing Industry

Taiwan Renowned Manufacturer “ S Company ”

Corporate Background

S Company is a well-known domestic manufacturer that operates in hardware and stationery business, and has expanded into leadframes and electronic components industries. Currently, it is the largest semiconductor lead frame manufacturer in the country. Besides focusing on diversified operations, it actively expands into international markets, establishing sales offices in Japan, the United States, and Europe to enhance corporate competitiveness and meet customer needs globally.

Corporate Needs

In response to the company’s global expansion, not only do S Company’s sales and procurement staff need to regularly contact foreign customers, but engineers also need to collaborate with colleagues of different nationalities. Communication and cooperation between them has become increasingly frequent. Engineers are no longer just focused on programming; they also need to use English correspondence for collaborative matters.

Most engineers at S Company can understand the technical terms in emails, but when the content contains complex English sentence structures, such as sentences with clauses, engineers often cannot fully comprehend the meaning. Or even after finally understanding the email content, they don’t know how to describe their thoughts in English and often feel overwhelmed about responding to English emails…

After learning about the engineers’ concerns and confirming the actual job requirements, the HR team has been thinking hard about whether there’s a way to solve this problem fundamentally, enabling engineers to write English correspondence easily and smoothly communicate with foreign colleagues and customers.

Solutions

To deeply understand S Company’s course requirements and expectations, the CLN team first conducted a needs assessment with S Company’s HR team to clarify employees’ English proficiency and course requirements.

At first glance, it seemed the engineers needed courses related to English correspondence. However, after exploring the root cause, CLN discovered that what engineers needed was English grammar-related courses, not directly related to business correspondence. This was because the engineers’ problems – not understanding others’ messages, not knowing how to express their opinions, and writing imprecise sentences – were all grammar-related issues. Therefore, the course team recommended S Company to consider CLN’s “Concept Grammar” course. After understanding sentence rules and types, employees would be better able to comprehend complex sentences, first overcoming their fear of English, then gradually building their English writing skills.

To help company employees build solid grammar concepts, CLN planned a 30-hour sequential course covering everything from establishing grammar concepts to analyzing complex clauses and parsing article paragraphs.

This grammar course wasn’t about reviewing high school grammar but redefining it, using “logic” to guide employees step by step through grammar rules, preventing them from falling into the vicious cycle of rote memorization and forgetting. Additionally, CLN systematically organized English grammar, creating the unique “Four Effective Ways to learn English,” helping students understand complex grammar rules at once, combined with their original participatory communication teaching method, allowing students to actively use what they learned in class to reinforce grammar concepts.

They no longer believe grammar can only be learned through rote memorization. Through CLN’s original mnemonics and teaching methods, employees could understand grammar rules and sentence structures thoroughly, making previously dry grammar lessons very interesting.

Everyone has learned English grammar in their English learning journey. Previously, learning was for exams, so high scores were achieved through memorization. But memorizing grammar, learning in a one-size-fits-all way, can only handle tests and cannot be truly applied in life. The workplace highly values the practical application of English ; only clear, solid grammar foundations can help employees quickly deconstruct sentences and understand article or letter content. After relearning English grammar, engineers of S Company no longer feel confused about complex sentences and can use the grammar structures learned in class to express their thoughts in English correspondence, saving considerable time costs for the company and creating greater benefits.
